PRODUCE (PID2024-160145NB-C21)
Audiovisual Content Production on LGBTIQ+: Agents, Industrial Contexts, Platforms, and Expectations of Impact
What is PRODUCE?
Building on the legacy of the previous LGBTIQ+ Screens project (PID2019-110351RB-I00), PRODUCE (PID2024-160145NB-C21) is a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Spanish State Research Agency (10.13039/501100011033), as well as co-founded by the European Regional Development Fund (EU/ERDF).
PRODUCE moves beyond the study of representation to explore the very engine of audiovisual content: the creators and production contexts. Between 2026 and 2029, this project will investigate how audiovisual content about LGBTIQ+ people is produced across a rich ecosystem of cultural media – from cinema and television to social media, independent creation, and activism.
PRODUCE seeks to understand how production dynamics shape not only LGBTIQ+ content, but also the realities of those who create it, and ultimately how such content can reduce prejudice and foster a more inclusive society.
What do we do?
PRODUCE investigates the production dynamics of LGBTIQ+ content, understanding how production contexts and intersectional variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, and class of professionals, activists, and content creators influence production routines, creative processes, perceived professional value, well‑being, and the resulting LGBTIQ+ representations.
We will also identify emerging roles (i.e., LGBTIQ+ authenticity consultants and intimacy coordinators), opportunities and tensions in the industry, studying how current media structures and new cultural practices affect creative self‑esteem, agency, and reducing prejudices against LGBTIQ+ people.
Expected Outcomes
PRODUCE aims at mapping how production dynamics shape LGBTIQ+ audiovisual content in a myriad contexts, with an especial emphasis on the Spanish context.
Our research will be disseminated through peer reviewed publications of articles and books, training courses for university education, best practice manuals for the audiovisual industry, and an annual international congress on media, gender and sexuality.
About us
PRODUCE is a coordinated research project with a team of sixteen researchers from twelve universities and institutions in Europe, South America and Southeast Asia.
The project is led by the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
